The 1616 purge.

The 1616 Purge: Almost as stressful as the movies, but with fewer weapons and less blood.

We’re about 70-ish% of the way through our purging process and everyone is still alive and (surprisingly) happy. I’m having much more fun getting rid of stuff than anyone else in the house, but so far we’ve avoided any legitimate (or illegitimate) fights up to this point.

Some highlights from the past couple of weeks:

  • I’ve managed to dodge all of the Facebook Marketplace scammers and keep track of our house sales without an elaborate spreadsheet.

  • We negotiated a cheap rate on an intentionally small storage unit and pre-paid for the year to avoid any month-to-month price increases. Knowing how much space we have has eliminated the inclination to hoard questionably sentimental items (can I get a shout-out to Ross’s expired container of window washing fluid?).

  • I relented and sold at least a third of my books to McKay’s and only have 7 book boxes in storage now (to be fair, one of them is Ross’s). 🙃

  • We convinced a lady to buy some of our stuff after quoting us for an interior house painting job, and I shoved an extra plant in her car before she left. Surprise adoption.

  • A guy quoting us for new flooring had an emergency bathroom pitstop in the middle of the walkthrough, made it a point to assure us that he didn’t watch anything nefarious on his work iPad (we didn’t ask), gave us an overly smarmy pitch on carpet padding, and then dropped a massive air biscuit on us before leaving the house. Sir, you’re hired.

Day 1 at the storage unit.

Despite our best efforts to avoid awkward small talk with strangers, Ross and I have had several nights and weekends full of porch pickups, vendor walkthroughs, and neighborhood chit-chats as we’ve been prepping the house for sale. True to character, Kleo has been a terrible guard dog, greeting every random person at our door and threatening to get in their car as they pull away from the house.

We’re getting close to being ready for our real estate photography, which is slated for the second week of October. New floors are going in on Tuesday (we didn’t hire air biscuit boy — though tempting), and we’re less than a month away from officially putting the house on the market.

Reality is definitely sinking in!
